Wir sind heute auf der Vitafoods in Genf und wir werden versuchen ganz tolle Informationen über Spirulina, über Algen allgemein, über Astaxanthin zu erhalten.
Wir haben gleich einige Termine und werden hier mit der Kamera versuchen einige Dinge einmal aufzuzeichnen um sie der Öffentlichkeit einfach zu zeigen. Bis dann. Tschau.
So, ich bin bei Bob Capelli, bei der Firma Cyanotech, die größte Firma der Welt für die Produktion von Spirulina. Ich kenne sie seit 20 Jahren und arbeite schon lange mit ihnen zusammen und wir bekommen auch die Original-Produkte von ihnen – so ist es ein sehr gutes Vertrauensverhältnis und wir kennen uns schon sehr lange und ich werde ihm einige Fragen stellen.
R.: Hi, Bob!
B.: Hi, how are you?
R.: Quite fine, I’m very happy to see you again.
B.: Yes! How is your biz?
R.: Oh, everything is hang loose, even in Germany now.
B.: Hahaha, hang loose sounds good!
R.: Okay, Bob tell me about the difference between Hawaiian Spirulina and Bio-Spirulina, certified organic Spirulina, because we have a lot of certified organic Spirulina from China and from India and sometimes my customers like to know what’s the differences are.
B.: Okay, there are actually a lot of differences. Now, first of all Cyanotech, the producer of Hawaiian Spirulina was the very first company in the entire world to ever produce any sort of microalgae, organic, bio. This is way back in the 1990s and we were certified organic for our Spirulina for several years, for about 15 years. Until 2005 they changed the rule about what kind of nitrogen we use. So we’re still producing a bio-spirulina, organic certified spirulina but just cannot put it on our label.
Now all the new producers of organic spirulina, what they’re doing is they’re taking organic sources of nitrogen that are not the natural way that spirulina grows in the wild. That spirulina is grown for over 3 billion years in the wild using the same kind of nitrogen source that we currently use. But they call their products certified organic because they use animal manure or compost tea and when you use these products and we did a lot of research on this before we decided that to change our source of nitrogen, you destroy your level of nutrients and much lower levels of nutrients, that things that give you health. In the spirulina.
And you can have contamination, so you can have high levels of bacteria, high levels of heavy metal. We have made the decision we’re not going on to be certified organic despite the product is still organic, but we’re not going to reduce the quality of our product.
R.: Okay, very good idea. Okay, thank you for this information. I think you are even one of the biggest produce in the world for Astaxanthin.
B.: That’s sure.
R.: And I know that to grow this alga, the name is Haematococcus pluvialis is very complicated.
B.: Much more than spirulina, yes, very complicated.
R.: And it is even very hard with the weather sometimes that it will not grow so much as you really need.
B.: Unfortunately, that’s sure.
R.: But what is the very best on/under Astaxanthin?
B.: Well, Astaxanthin, as you say is very, very difficult to work with. It’s hard to grow, it’s hard to dry, it’s hard to extract, it’s hard to package properly, it’s hard to encapsulate and if you don’t take care in every step of the process to prevent exposure to oxygen and what happens is: the Astaxanthin oxidizes and it won’t hurt you, it’s no safety concern but it becomes inert, what that means is it is no longer working as antioxidant, it’s neutral, so it doesn’t give you any health benefits.
So we have seen many, many products, in fact we have tested 15 different commercial products and only three of them had exact the amount of Astaxanthin that is said on the label. Twelve of them had well less than what they say on the label because it had oxidized. So you have to be very careful in every single step of the process.
Now here is a product under market currently in Germany, they call it 6-mg-Astaxanthin. Now first of all, if this was 6-mg-Astaxanthin this should be much, much darker red, this would not be this color. So what’s happening is they put this in a what they call a vegetarian gel-cap or, I’m sorry, a vegetarian capsule and it is oxidized because this capsule is not preventing those light and oxygen from entering into it and what happens is now we have a product that is not gonna have nearly but for sure the Astaxanthin that is said on the label of the product and people probably are not to get any health benefit of this product.
R.: Does it mean that Astaxanthin when it is in powder condition that it will oxidize very quickly that it is not safe for oxidation?
B.: Yeah, again it is safe to consume, it won’t hurt you. But it is not protecting from oxidizing, so we highly recommend against this pattern of delivering Astaxanthin. We highly recommend a gel-cap. A gel-cap with Astaxanthin is suspending oil, so the oil itself is protecting Astaxanthin.
Secondarily it is mixed a little with vitamin E, vitamin E is very good for the health benefits of Astaxanthin.
And the last thing, it’s inside of a gel-cap. That’s a 100% sealed – you can’t open it, cause it is not a capsule. So it is very, very protective for Astaxanthin content.
R.: Okay, what is the biggest effect of Astaxanthin in the human body?
B.: Astaxanthin is an extremely powerful antioxidant and it is also a safe and natural effective anti-inflammatory. So these two major focus of Astaxanthin’s activity it has a very effect on many different parts of our body. For example very different people have joint pain, muscle pain, a soreness in their tendons. Very helpful for painful situations, increased mobility, decreased pain. It’s very, very good for our skin. It helps to prevent damage from the sun, from the UV which damages the skin from the inside out.
Also it helps to improve the quality of the skin, may you look a little more beautiful. It reduces the fine wrinkles. It also helps to increase the skin moisture, the elasticity.
R.: I think you take it every day, yes?
B.: I take it for 13 years!
Also very, very good for eyes and brain because the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action can actually pass the barrier to the brain and the eyes. And there are several other things. A lot of people take it for example for energy, sports. For athletes, especially endurance athletes, they do much better and longer workout. So very good for athletes.
